ORAS How to chain using DexNav and increase your odds at catching a shiny pokemon (self.pokemon). If you end up having a pokemon show up through the DexNav that you aren't chaining, go ahead and KO it or catch it then search again for the pokemon you were chaining. Your chain will still go on. This tool will then re-calculate based on your new data, and will help to further narrow down your results. You can do this several times if you are still getting multiple results. What is an IV in Pokemon Go? Each Pokemon has 3 separate IVs: these are hidden values between 0 and 15 for the Attack, Defense, and Stamina stats.
TL;DR: Have a high search level and a large patch of grass. My shiny results are at the end.
It's safe to say that chaining for shinies is back in the form of DexNav! These are just some tips from my own experience on how to chain and get yourself a shiny. This is in no way a definitive be all and end all guide. This is just what I've learned by catching a few shinies myself using this method. Feel free to comment what your chain and search level were at if you end up nabbing one.
What will help:
¤ Super/Max Repels
¤ A pokemon with the sweet scent ability (e.g. Surskit)
¤ A pokemon with the synchronize ability and preferred nature you want your shiny to be (e.g. Abra)
¤ A high search level
¤ A large patch of grass (if this is where you'll be doing your chaining)
¤ Ethers
¤ Capture o-power
¤ PP Restoring o-power
¤ Patience

First off, in order to start searching for the pokemon you want to chain, you will have to have caught it at least once. After that you'll be able to tap on its sprite in the DexNav. This is where you can find your search level and actively start searching for the pokemon. From what I've experienced, the higher your search level, the smaller the chance you'll have at interrupting your chain.
Your chain will break if you start walking (no longer sneaking) too close to the pokemon and scare it off or if you run away from battle. So, take it slow! If you're chaining in grass the pokemon will remain stationary and will take about a minute before it will disappear on its own at least towards the beginning of your chain. If this happens to you, you can quickly run around to reset your DexNav.
Before you start chaining, if you can find the pokemon you want to chain in a horde I recommend that you use sweet scent to rapidly increase your search level for that pokemon. I've had good luck getting it up to at least 50 and start chaining from there.
Now to actually start the chain! All you have to do is pop a repel, click on the pokemon you want to search, and tap search. If you're doing this in grass (God help you if you aren't) all you have to do is take your time and just make sure you're sneaking. If you aren't doing this in grass I recommend that you practice being able to sneak/surf as fast as possible without scaring the pokemon off. A helpful fact to keep in mind is that you can run/walk as long as you're more than 5 tiles away from the pokemon since that seems to be the 'scare radius' for lack of a better term.
The DexNav displays the following when you are close enough to the pokemon you are trying to chain:
Level
First move
Ability
Potential
Held item
There's a chance of there being an exclamation point after its level, first move, and ability. It being after its level simply means it's a higher level, after its first move means it has an egg move, and after its ability means that it has a hidden ability (HA). Each potential star is at least one perfect IV. When at higher chains, it is possible that three potential stars (max) can lead to more than three perfect IV's.
All you have to do to chain is to either KO the pokemon or capture it and then search for it again. If you end up having a pokemon show up through the DexNav that you aren't chaining, go ahead and KO it or catch it then search again for the pokemon you were chaining. Your chain will still go on. Note: You CAN move in between chains. With this in mind, it's recommended you move to the center of the grass if that's where you're chaining.
Every 5th consecutive chain (5, 10, 15, etc.) guarantees that pokemon to have at least 2 exclamation points, at least one potential star, and have 10 levels added to its base level. The base level of the pokemon will then increase by one. If I were to make a comparison, the odds to me seem about the same as chain fishing, although that is just a guess from my experience. Yours may differ.
Here are my shinies that I caught just yesterday:

I used this patch of grass on route 121 http://imgur.com/MNro7zJ for those 2 pokemon.

Please comment with your experiences and tips!
Edit: Added that you CAN move in between chains thanks to /u/TentacleMage I assumed you couldn't. It's probably best to return to the center of the grass like he suggested.
Edit: Confirmed that a potential star equals at least one perfect IV thanks to /u/KalistheGalvanic At higher chains it's possible to have more than 3 perfect IV's when having 3 potential stars.
Edit: Added that every 5th consecutive chain will have 10 levels added to the base level of that pokemon for that single encounter thanks to /u/NyaTaku
Edit: Added that the 'scare radius' or the area where if you run/walk you will scare the pokemon is 5 tiles. This will be helpful when cave/water chaining. Added that the DexNav is reset by steps.
TL;DR: High search level, large patch of grass, and luck. God help you if you aren't chaining in grass.
